Speech Therapy in an Aquatic Setting
What Is Speech Therapy in an Aquatic Setting?
Speech therapy in an aquatic setting consists of evidence-based treatment sessions conducted in a pool, where your child’s speech and language goals are targeted through engaging, play-based activities.
The water becomes a tool, supporting regulation, focus, and connection, while therapy remains structured, individualized, and goal-driven.
Why Therapy in Water Can Be So Powerful
Calming & Regulating
The natural buoyancy and gentle pressure of water can create a calming, “weighted blanket” effect, helping children feel more regulated and ready to learn.
Supports Sensory Processing
Water provides rich tactile, proprioceptive, and vestibular input, creating a sensory-friendly environment that enhances engagement.
Builds Communication Growth
Multisensory, hands-on experiences support speech and language growth through meaningful, real-time interaction.
Improves Focus & Behavior
The structured yet playful environment can increase attention, cooperation, and emotional regulation.
Stronger Skill Carryover
Practicing communication while moving, playing, and problem-solving helps skills transfer into everyday life.
Enhances Cognitive Skills
Activities can target multi-step directions, working memory, attention, and executive functioning.
What to Expect During Sessions
Sessions are designed to feel fun, engaging, and supportive. while still targeting individualized therapy goals.
Activities may include guided play, following directions, problem-solving tasks, and social interaction, all thoughtfully adapted to the aquatic environment.
Every session is tailored to you or your child’s needs, comfort level, and communication goals.
Please Note: These sessions are not swim lessons. While we are in the water, the primary focus is always on speech, language, and communication development.
Why I Created This Offering
Water has always been a meaningful part of my life. I began swim lessons at just six months old and continued through years of competitive and collegiate swimming. Over the past decade, I’ve also worked as a private swim instructor with individuals of all ages and experience levels.
As a speech-language pathologist, I’ve had the privilege of working with children across a wide range of needs and backgrounds. Bringing these two passions together, therapy and the water, felt like a natural and exciting next step.
I’m honored to offer a space where children can feel comfortable, engaged, and supported while working toward their communication goals.
